Resting heart rate is the number of heartbeats per minute while you are awake and calm. Values vary between adults; a consistently measured trend matters more than one reading.
Measure consistently
Count for 60 seconds in the morning before getting up, or after sitting quietly. Caffeine, fever, stress, medicines and exercise can affect the result.
When to seek help
A new marked change with chest pain, fainting, shortness of breath or palpitations needs medical assessment.
Track it well
- 1Measure at a similar time and under similar conditions.
- 2Follow a weekly average rather than one reading.
- 3Note symptoms and medication changes separately.
Limitations
General ranges are not diagnostic. Athletic training, pregnancy, illness and medicines change individual interpretation.
