How it's calculated
- 1Mifflin–St Jeor equation: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age, +5 for men, −161 for women.
- 2Daily need = BMR × activity factor (1.2 sedentary – 1.9 very active).
- 3These are average estimates; individual values can differ by around 10%.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMR the same as daily calories?
No. BMR is at rest; daily needs also include movement and digestion.
How much less should I eat to lose weight?
Usually a modest deficit below your daily need is enough. Very low intake can cause muscle loss; ask a dietitian in special cases.
Does metabolism slow with age?
In the equation the value drops with age. Keeping muscle through strength training and enough protein helps limit the decline.
