How it's calculated
- 1Ratio = waist ÷ hip circumference.
- 2WHO (2008): 0.90 or above for men and 0.85 or above for women indicates a substantially increased metabolic risk.
- 3Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and the hips at their widest point.
Frequently asked questions
Why does waist-to-hip ratio matter?
Fat stored around the abdomen is linked to cardiovascular and metabolic risk independently of BMI.
When should I measure?
In the morning, before eating, after a normal breath out, without pulling the tape tight. Use the same conditions each time.
My ratio is high — what now?
This is not a diagnosis. Activity, sleep and diet all affect waist size; talk to your doctor if you have health concerns.
